What is orthodontic treatment?

**Orthodontics** is the corrective treatment of misaligned teeth and improper bite. The goal of this treatment is not only to improve the aesthetics of the smile but also to establish a functionally correct bite, enable high-quality dental restorations, and restore proper speech, swallowing, and chewing functions.

When is it needed?

There are various reasons for improper bite or misaligned teeth, including:

Early loss of baby or permanent teeth due to trauma or complications from cavities

Positional anomalies of individual teeth – teeth may erupt crooked, outside the dental arch, or become impacted due to lack of space or abnormal tooth bud positioning

Skeletal bite anomalies – mismatched upper and lower jaw relationships, underdeveloped jaw, asymmetric jaw growth, or trauma

Genetically inherited bite disorders

Parafunctional habits – such as incorrect swallowing patterns, thumb sucking, mouth breathing, or improper tongue posture at rest

If you notice any of the following signs, it is recommended to consult an orthodontist. The earlier you take action, the easier and quicker the problem can be resolved—preventing it from worsening over time.

The first orthodontic consultation is recommended once the permanent front teeth have erupted. Orthodontic treatment with clear aligners or braces can be carried out for both children and older patients, depending on the individual case.

It is especially important to monitor the dental arch development in children aged 7 to 14, as this is a critical period of jaw and tooth growth. Early diagnosis of orthodontic anomalies allows for simpler, more effective treatment and helps avoid more complex procedures in the future.

Why is it needed?

According to scientific research, the prevalence of orthodontic anomalies among schoolchildren in Lithuania is 84.7% for those aged 7–15. The need for orthodontic treatment has been identified in every second child aged 10–11 (49.6%) and in one out of three adolescents aged 14–15 (34.1%).

It is a misconception to think that crooked teeth are only an aesthetic issue. An improper bite can contribute to various health problems, such as headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and breathing difficulties. Misaligned teeth can impair chewing and speaking functions, increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and dental trauma. Crooked or poorly erupted teeth, along with bite problems, are among the leading factors that impact self-confidence—often causing people to feel self-conscious about their smile and avoid smiling openly.

Orthodontic Appliances and Systems

Orthodontic treatment can be performed using either removable appliances—such as clear aligners, plates, or functional devices—or fixed appliances, including fixed expanders, functional appliances (e.g., the Herbst appliance), and various types of braces systems.

Teeth Straightening with Braces

Treatment with braces typically begins after the eruption of permanent teeth or at the end of the mixed dentition phase. The system consists of brackets bonded to the surface of the teeth and orthodontic archwires attached to them. These components work together to straighten teeth and correct the bite. Additional tools such as elastic bands, fixed functional appliances, palatal or lingual arches, and mini-implants may also be used during treatment.

There is a wide variety of orthodontic braces available, and the choice of system depends heavily on individual needs. During your consultation at Šypsenos akademija, you will discuss your expectations with an orthodontist, who will help you choose the most suitable type of braces based on your specific case.

Teeth Straightening with Clear Aligners

Thanks to digital technology and innovative solutions, teeth straightening today can be both discreet and comfortable. Clear aligner treatment is the most modern method of orthodontic care—long sought after by professionals as a way to provide patients with a highly comfortable yet equally effective alternative to traditional braces.

At "Šypsenos akademija", we offer aligners from the most trusted and popular manufacturers. Depending on your specific needs and expectations, your orthodontist will help you choose the most suitable aligner brand for your treatment.

Orthodontic Plates

Orthodontic plates are removable appliances with a plastic base that hold various retention and active components such as springs, screws, and clasps. They offer an effective and affordable treatment option, though they are not suitable for all types of orthodontic anomalies.

The main drawbacks of plates include more difficult adaptation (discomfort and potential speech issues while wearing the device), the need for strong patient cooperation, and the appliance's limited capabilities compared to other treatment methods.

Frequently asked questions

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The average duration of orthodontic treatment is between 1.5 to 2.5 years. However, the total treatment time depends on several factors: the complexity of the clinical case, the type of condition, the chosen orthodontic system, the age at which treatment begins, the scope of treatment, and the patient’s compliance. Treatment may take longer if the patient misses follow-up appointments or does not follow the doctor’s instructions.

When should I consult an orthodontist for my child?

The first consultation is recommended around age 7, once the permanent front teeth have erupted. It’s especially important to monitor the condition of the dental arches in children aged 7–14, as the jaws and teeth are still growing during this period, allowing for excellent treatment outcomes.

What is the difference between clear aligners and braces?

Clear aligners (also known as "aligners") are transparent trays that cover the entire dental arch, similar in appearance to whitening trays or night guards. Their main advantages over traditional braces are aesthetics and comfort. They are nearly invisible and can be removed for up to 2 hours per day if needed. Aligners are easier to clean, cause no discomfort while eating, and do not hinder oral hygiene. They’re ideal for frequent travelers. The only major downside compared to braces is that they require strong self-discipline—aligners can be easily forgotten or skipped, affecting the outcome.

Is teeth straightening a necessary procedure?

The main concern with crooked teeth is not just aesthetics. Misaligned teeth are harder to clean, which increases plaque buildup, cavity risk, and the chances of developing gum disease or even losing teeth. An improper bite can also lead to abnormal tooth wear. Jaw misalignment may result in headaches or back pain. Improper chewing can affect digestion, and bite issues may interfere with speech. On a psychological level, patients often feel self-conscious about their smile and avoid smiling or engaging socially, leading to low self-esteem.

What causes an improper bite?

Bite irregularities can be hereditary or caused by other factors: poor care of baby teeth, harmful habits (prolonged pacifier use, thumb sucking, infantile swallowing, mouth breathing), teeth grinding (which deepens the bite), or missing teeth not replaced in time. In such cases, neighboring teeth can shift into the gap, deforming the dental arch.

How often should I visit the orthodontist while wearing braces?

To ensure smooth orthodontic treatment with braces and achieve the best possible results, check-ups and adjustments with your orthodontist are required every 7–8 weeks.

How often do I need to visit the dental clinic when wearing aligners?

If you choose clear aligner treatment, depending on your individual case, as few as 5–6 in-clinic visits may be enough.
This reduced number of appointments is possible thanks to advanced digital diagnostics, which allow your specialist to assess your dental condition and monitor progress remotely.
During each visit, a digital scan of your teeth is performed to evaluate treatment progress—making the appointment completely painless and comfortable.
