What is it?

At "Šypsenos akademija", we provide a full range of dental services for children and adolescents—from routine and preventive procedures to the treatment of complex dental development anomalies, bite issues, trauma care, and sedation-assisted dental treatment. We also issue electronic dental health certificates for educational institutions such as kindergartens, schools, and more.

Our large team of specialists across all fields of dentistry—hygienists, general dentists, pediatric dentists, oral surgeons, orthodontists, endodontists, and others—allows us to handle even the most complex cases and provide comprehensive, top-quality care for our youngest patients.

When is it needed?

At "Šypsenos akademija", it is important to us that dental treatment for children is free from fear and negative emotions. That’s why we encourage parents to bring their children for regular preventive visits from an early age. These visits help identify dental issues at an early stage and allow children to become familiar with dentistry in a positive, stress-free way.

A child’s first visit to the dentist should take place when their first teeth erupt. After that, regular check-ups every 6 months are recommended. This approach helps prevent pain and discomfort during appointments, and ensures that children become comfortable with dental visits and do not develop fear.

Why is it needed?

In Lithuania, every second child under the age of three already has teeth affected by cavities, and by preschool age, as many as 94% of children in this age group experience problems caused by tooth decay. That’s why regular preventive dental visits are recommended from an early age—even when the child’s teeth appear healthy.

How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit?

A child's first visit to the dental clinic is extremely important and can shape their future relationship with dentistry. That’s why it’s essential for parents to prepare their child properly:

Don’t wait until there’s a problem. Avoid waiting for tooth pain or other issues to arise. By establishing the habit of regular preventive visits from an early age, problems can be detected in their early stages—avoiding the need for complex treatments or pain. Don’t pass on your own dental anxieties or lie about the visit.

Explain the visit positively. Tell your child they’ll be visiting a tooth doctor who will look at and count their teeth with a little mirror, and all they need to do is sit bravely in the chair and open wide.

Use playful tools. Show your child fun cartoons, read storybooks, or play games related to dentistry to help them become familiar with the environment. Make dental visits routine. Regular check-ups help avoid pain and discomfort during appointments and ensure your child gets used to seeing the dentist—without fear.

Procedure flow

At "Šypsenos akademija", children's dental care is divided into regular preventive visits, treatment of minor dental issues, and management of more complex dental conditions.

Treatment pathway

First step

First Visit to the Dental Clinic

The first visit should serve as an introduction to the clinic and a consultation, allowing the child and the dentist to get acquainted and perform a comprehensive dental assessment. This helps identify any existing dental issues and plan future treatment. It’s recommended to start with the simplest procedures so the child becomes comfortable with dental visits and doesn’t develop fear.

Second step

Regular Preventive Visits

Routine appointments with the dental hygienist are essential. During these visits, the child's dental condition is thoroughly checked, a professional cleaning specifically tailored for children is performed, and both the child and parents receive guidance on proper oral care practices.

third step

Minor Dental Issues

If cavities or other minor dental problems are detected, the child is treated by a general dentist.

Fourth step

Complex Dental Issues

In cases of severe decay or multiple cavities, the child is referred to a pediatric dentist. If the child experiences significant dental anxiety or needs treatment for five or more teeth, sedation may be used—allowing the procedures to be done while the child is asleep.

Children’s Dental Treatment with Sedation

Sedation is a medically induced state of reduced consciousness that helps the patient relax during dental procedures. At "Šypsenos akademija", dental treatment under sedation—commonly referred to as “sleep dentistry”—may be offered when:

The child experiences significant dental anxiety;

The child has a low pain threshold;

The child's teeth are extremely sensitive;

Multiple teeth need to be treated in one visit or a long, complex procedure is planned.

Pricing

We assess each case individually and adapt to the financial possibilities of the patient. For this purpose, an extremely flexible system of payment for services is applied. Do not delay treatment because of finances, we assure you - together we always find a compromise.

Frequently asked questions

When should a child first visit the dentist?

A child’s first visit to the dentist should take place when their first teeth erupt.

What is dental treatment with sedation?

Sedation is a medically induced state of reduced consciousness that helps the patient relax during the procedure. If a child has significant dental anxiety or needs treatment for 5–6 or more teeth, dental treatment under sedation—performed while the child sleeps—may be recommended.

How to prepare a child for their first dental visit?

The first visit should be an introduction to the clinic and a consultation, allowing both the child and the dentist to become familiar with each other and to perform a full dental evaluation. It is not recommended to wait until the child experiences pain or visible dental issues. Starting with the simplest procedures helps the child get used to the environment without fear. Avoid lying about the visit or projecting your own dental fears onto the child.
Explain to the child that they will be seeing a “tooth doctor” who will look at and count their teeth with a small mirror. Encourage them to sit bravely in the chair and open their mouth wide. It’s helpful to show them cartoons, read books, or play games related to dentistry.

Should baby teeth be treated?

Absolutely. Under every baby tooth lies a developing permanent tooth.

When and how should you start brushing your child’s teeth?

Tooth brushing should begin as soon as the first tooth erupts. While children may want to brush their teeth on their own, they are not capable of doing it properly until they can write in cursive—usually around age 7 or 8. Until then, parents should be responsible for brushing.
Parents often worry about toothpaste use in young children who can’t spit yet, but water alone does not protect against cavities. Young children eat many sticky, carbohydrate-rich foods, so fluoride toothpaste is essential. Use only a tiny amount—just enough to slightly moisten the brush bristles. Šypsenos akademija specialists can provide more guidance during your visit.

What toothbrush and toothpaste are best for toddlers?

According to the Lithuanian Dental Chamber, children aged 0–3 with healthy teeth should use fluoride toothpaste containing 500 ppm F-. The toothbrush should be soft, comfortable for parents to use, and small enough to clean baby teeth effectively. A single-tuft brush (one-tooth brush) is ideal—it has a long handle, allowing parents full visibility of the child’s mouth while brushing.

Do children need additional dental care products besides a toothbrush and toothpaste?

The most essential tools are a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, starting from the first erupted tooth. The most important task is for parents to thoroughly remove plaque. Any additional products should be recommended by a dental specialist based on the child’s individual needs.

Are anesthetics used in children’s dental treatments?

Yes, local anesthesia is commonly used. If necessary, Šypsenos akademija also offers dental treatment for children under sedation.
